There could only be one National champion, the best collegiate
basketball team of the Philippines. Who would it be the defending
champions Ateneo de Manila University or the San Sebastian
College-Recoletos? Game 1, The Blue Eagles won over The Golden Stags.
The best player of the game was Nicolas Salva. Will the Ateneo be able
to defend their 3 PCCL titles? Or the hungrier Golden Stags will sweep
the championship?
It's already 3:30 pm, the start of the do or die game and yet, the
Ateneo players are not yet complete. Some of them were still stocked
in traffic along Katipunan ave. Gregory Slaughter and Louis Gonzaga
were not part of the first five and they didn't even get the chance to
warm-up because they're late. Their first five are Nico Salva, Kiefer
Ravena, Kirk Long and Frank Golla. Juami Tiongson and Greg Slaughter
are the only players who got a double digits scores. The explosive
Juami Tiongson exploded in the third quarter, wherein he got all his
11 points, he out shadowed Kiefer and Salva, because surprisingly both
of them didn't play well, especially Ravena who only got one field
goal score.
The San Sebastian Stags were already in the Filoil Arena at around
1:30 pm. They started warming up early. You can see to their faces the
eagerness to win. If ever they win in this game they will be able to
get a new record, the only NCAA team who wins the championship in
PCCL. UAAP teams always dominated the PCCL.
The hard work of San Sebastian paid off! They swept the title to the
Eagles. Final score 71-65 in favor of the Stags. They won a total of
900,000 pesos. The Finals Mythical Five are Nico Salva, Calvin Abueva,
Jun Fajardo of University of Cebu, Greg Slaughter and Ian Sangalang,
he also won the Finals MVP. For Coach Topex Robinson it is the
sweetest win ever, because this is his first year as a coach plus a
new record for the Stags.
The Final Four Teams
University of Cebu-fourth placer
San Beda College-third placer
Ateneo de Manila University-second placer
San Sebastian College-Recoletos-first place/champion
What's next for Ateneo after this? Will they be able to bounce back
and sweep the PCCL title to San Sebastian next season? We'll see.
Congratulations to all the winners. Still, win or lose it's the school
we choose. Go Ateneo. One Big Fight!
